Choosing the Right Disinfectant

There are many disinfectant products on the market you can choose from and likely many more to come in response to the coronavirus outbreak. So how do you make sense of it all and confidently make the right decision? Here are some questions you should be asking when narrowing down your options:

  • Is the disinfectant an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant with efficacy against a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria and fungi?
  • Is it approved under the EPA’s Emerging Viral Pathogen Guidance for use against the virus that causes COVID-19 disease”?
  • Is it a professional product designed specifically for salons or spas? You wouldn’t use consumer products and equipment in your facility, so why use household disinfectants?
  • Disinfectants all have a contact time indicated on their label, which is the length of time the solution must remain wet on the surface to effectively kill pathogens. These contact times typically range from 1-10 minutes. Can you afford to wait 10 minutes between client appointments? Is a 10 minute contact time even realistic or would it require multiple applications (to stay wet)?
  • What’s the safety profile of the disinfectant you’re thinking of using (or are already using)? You’re going to be exposed to powerful chemicals more frequently, so it’s best you’re aware of any side effects like eye and skin irritation, respiratory issues and other health related complications.
  • Does the disinfectant require use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and if so are
you factoring this into your daily routine, costing and time allocations between clients?
  • Is the disinfectant eco-friendly or biodegradable so you’re also kind to the planet while looking after your staff and clients?

The answers to most of these questions can be found on the product’s label or Safety Data Sheet (SDS) located on a manufacturer's website. Not all disinfectants are the same, so choose a disinfecting brand that’s right for your spa.
